Jio Glass Mixed Reality Headset Announced By Reliance Jio

Jio Glass Mixed Reality Headset

The latest buzz, as you all know, is Google’s investment in India’s Jio Platforms, came as a sweet surprise. What’s more, is that the company launched its first MR (mixed reality) headset, named Jio Glass at the Reliance virtual 43rd Annual General Meeting on Wednesday.

This crossover between Google & Jio will be quite interesting as people all over have great expectations. It will be a great deal for India with Google investing in a home-grown company like Reliance.

Jio Glass Mixed Reality Headset: Specs And Features

To start with design, Jio Glass Mixed Reality Headset is casually vibed; unlike the oversized HoloLens or Oculus headsets. Weighing about 75 grams only, they have a high-resolution display for a great experience.

Right at the center, there is an inbuilt camera, between the two lenses. Even though it looks odd a bit, but we can’t wait to see how it looks in reality. There is also a button located on the right stem. The details may be less, but this device will let you interact with the many elements of Mixed Reality and its software, making for an interesting wait.

Kiran elaborated, “Jio Glass allows smooth collaboration across devices and platforms to ensure we stay connected,”  during the demo.

Your projects can be shared in a virtual environment. Another interesting use is  Virtual Classrooms; wherein Jio Glass’ promising device becomes essential in times like these while everyone is home due to Covid-19. Teachers will have the advantage of conducting a holographic classroom using this device, making it really easy for everyone.

Coming to the software

The company highlighted the fact that Jio Glass is already supporting 25+ apps and gave a demo of an app that was similar to the Facebook horizon. The Ambani twins, Aakash and Isha joined in a virtual avatar and via laptop respectively to a video call with Kiran Thomas, the President of Reliance Industries for the unveil of Jio Glass.

Next, talking about audio, which is a very important aspect to consider; Jio Glass Mixed Reality Headset is supposedly offering a personalized audio experience with the speakers integrated with the stem of the glasses. This may or may not be true considering the company didn’t outrightly mention it, and it could be considering bone technology for the audio output. One doesn’t need any accessories as it will support all audio formats.

Another key feature is that one can directly connect the headset to their phones to access internet services. The company didn’t elaborate on whether the device supports USB type-c or a proprietary port. But you will surely need a cable to connect to the phones to access the internet services on the mixed reality device.

The price, as well as the technical deets, are still awaited. But we expect Jio platforms to throw some light on the mixed reality plans; share SDKs and devkits for beginning the app developments in the forthcoming months. Jio Glass Mixed Reality Headset is a perfect example of the company’s approach towards a digital and connected future; which is expected to see the advent of 5G services.

Latest update: Reliance Industries has not confirmed anything about the availability and price of the Jio Glass. But hopefully, it will be available from next month. It is said to be priced at Rs. 14,000 in India.
