OnePlus 9R First Impressions: Does ‘Never Settle’ Still Hold True?

OnePlus 9R

Does the OnePlus 9R really make it up for OnePlus? OnePlus has come a long way in the mobile industry. They have come from being a flagship killer to a flagship maker. So where does OnePlus 9R falls in these categories?

OnePlus 9R is not quite the flagship or flagship killer as OnePlus is already done with its OnePlus 9 Pro and OnePlus 9. We can say it is OnePlus’s “Affordable Flagship-alike”.

OnePlus 9R

In OnePlus’s notebook, the OnePlus 9R is a stripped-down version of the OnePlus 9. But for some reason, it undercuts the flagship killer OnePlus 9 in some ways. Let’s talk first about the advantages of the OnePlus 9R over the OnePlus 9.

Advantages of OnePlus 9R

You get a metal frame sandwiched in Corning’s Gorilla Glass with OnePlus 9R compared to the plastic frame of the OnePlus 9. Now, this will be annoying to OnePlus 9 users that they get a cheaper-looking smartphone for the higher price they have spent.

And that’s not it, you get a premium build and an OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) stabilized Camera system which is missing in the OnePlus 9. It’s not a big deal but it is an advantage in the video department and low-light photography as well. This is the advantage of the cheaper OnePlus 9R over the regular OnePlus 9.

So now, let’s see where did OnePlus cut corners in the OnePlus 9R.

You don’t get the Snapdragon 888 or the bells and whistles of Hasselblad with its camera but do most of the users really need that top-of-the-line Snapdragon or one of the best cameras in the market?

Processor

You still get an 800-series Snapdragon chip and a fairly pass-able camera system with the OnePlus 9R. Snapdragon 870 5G is a beast. You don’t have to pay the top dollar for the top-tier processor and you still get close to the 888-like performance on this chip.

It fits right between last year’s Snapdragon 865 Plus and this year’s Snapdragon 888. Any heavy game or heavy task that you would throw on it will be done like a flagship processor which it actually is.

Camera

So, there is no crazy Hasselblad branding on the camera bump. We don’t know does it something to do with being the cheapest variant of the OnePlus 9 Series or not but we are all in for it. The camera system looks like OnePlus just took the OnePlus 8T’s camera system and put it on the 9R.

It is literally the same. The main sensor consists of the 48MP Sony IMX586 (of course, OIS Stabilized) paired with an ultrawide camera having a megapixel count of 16MP, a field of view of 123 degrees, and some helper 2MP monochrome & 5 MP macro lens.

Nothing new here, it is the same which is a good thing because last year’s OnePlus 8T had a fairly good camera. It gets the job done. We are yet to see if the OnePlus-Hasselblad partnership has improved the software side of things or not.

Display

The display is quite nice here. The 6.55 inches 120Hz Fluid AMOLED is also taken from the OnePlus 8T. It is flat and supports 1080p sRGB & P3 color profiles. Of course, OnePlus knows how to make it a brilliant display.

Oxygen 0S 11

OnePlus has always nailed the software experience of its phones and the OnePlus 9R is no exception to this. It is as fluid and smooth as it gets. They haven’t done any major changes to it, only the minor and some aesthetic ones to keep it simple & responsive. Oxygen 0S running on top of Android 11 and will be upgraded to a couple of Android’s major versions.

OnePlus also provided the list of OnePlus devices eligible for OxygenOS 11. So, you will know that your OnePlus smartphone will get an OxygenOS 11 update or not.

Power

You will get a 4500 mAH battery under the hood which supports 65W fast charging and the 65W charger comes in the box as well. The charging brick however doesn’t support USB-PD as the OnePlus 8T charging brick did. And also, there is no wireless charging which is a bummer but we expected that.

Conclusion

You getting an OnePlus 8T with upgrades of 2021 in name of OnePlus 9R at Rs 40,000. With its premium build and overall great specs, it turns out to be even a better deal than the OnePlus 9. It stands out as a complete package that doesn’t disappoint at anything. We see OnePlus really keep up with its “Never Settle” slogan.
