Why Is Tinder Called Tinder? [Complete Information]

When people around you start being boring, Tinder has a way out for you. Launched in 2012, an American geosocial networking and online dating app brings the world close to you. Sean Rad, Justin Mateen, and Jonathan Badeen are the founders of the Tinder app. Their first choice for the platform’s name was ‘Matchbox’ but then Tinder gave it a new meaning. What was the meaning? Why is Tinder called Tinder? We will discuss these things in this article. Stay tuned!

Why Is It Called Tinder?

Since the idea was clear, another challenge for the founders was to have a name. This could relate to the idea of the dating platform and convince users to trust them.

An online dating service website ‘Match’ was in existence, the trio decided not to confuse users with Matchbox. However, they were looking for a name that could relate to fire or spark.

Jonathan Badeen said,

“We still liked that sort of fire theme, so actually we looked through a dictionary, a thesaurus, something like that, looking for fire-related words”.

Eventually, they approached an English directory named, Merriam Webster where they caught the word ‘Tinder’ means “dry material (such as wood or grass) that burns easily and can be used to start a fire.” Finally, it’s all they wanted.

Rad said in an interview.

“The idea for Tinder came along when I started thinking about the fact that there are a lot of great platforms that help us communicate with people we already know, but there isn’t a way for me to meet new people. In this app, you anonymously say if you’re interested in somebody, and if that person happens to be interested in you, you can have a conversation.”

With the name, the idea was completed and ready to launch. Hence, on 12 September 2012, it finally came out of the box. Now, the users were a swipe away to offer a flame to a new, exciting, and romantic relationship.

What does the Tinder logo mean?

The flame logo is a clear definition of Tinder whose motto is to light up the fire of a relationship.

How does Tinder work?

By 2014, it started receiving over one million swipes each day. It was going high in terms of liking, sharing, and making relationships on the planet.

The app works on swipes; swipe right and swipe left. Swipe right, when you like or interested in someone whereas swipe left when there is no such case. Even if you have swiped right, the chat will be only started after getting a match, which means a swipe right back.

Since it is the essential feature of the app, it saves you from unwanted matches. Among its features, super-like is another interesting feature. The profiles, which have been super liked, are shown on the top of the feed.

Profile and Privacy

To create a profile on the app, you can either link it to Facebook or just sign up via phone number. Through settings, you can control what information to be shown or hide, except the general ones.

It is an adult dating app; hence, you can become its member only if you are 18+. Also, it let you filter matches based on age, gender, and distance.

Besides this, you can upgrade it to its Plus, Gold, or Platinum version to unlock other interesting features like boost and more.

Conclusion

On this app, you can meet people like or unlike you, or can have chat and who knows if someone becomes yours forever.
